The Country

Italy is home to the greatest number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the world. High art and monuments plus delicious traditional food are everywhere around the country. Its great cities of art are world famous and have been attracting visitors for centuries. Italy also features beautiful coasts, lakes and mountains. No wonder it is often nicknamed the Bel Paese (beautiful country).

School Life

The Italian educational system is quite difficult and expectations are high. Participants will be enrolled in the 3rd or 4th year of the five years of the scuola superiore program; they will follow classes in a local liceo from Monday to Saturday morning. Classes include Italian, Mathematics, Sciences, Physics, Foreign Language (English, German or French), Geography, History, Physical Education... The school year runs from September to June.
School Day
• 8.30am to 1.30 - 2.00pm
• Saturday classes may be allocated

How does the Classic+ program work?

The Classic + school program is an alternative to the Classic program for students who have a preference for their placement. At the time of enrollment, the student chooses one of the five options offered in the Classic + program: urban area, North, South, Central or Islands and they will have a better chance of living in the area they have chosen.

With the Classic + option students can be placed anywhere in the chosen area, however it does not guarantee a specific location/city. WEP Italy will do everything possible to find a family and school in the preferred area. It is important to know that a proactive search for a placement within that area does not guarantee placement there. Even if most Classic + requests are confirmed at the time of placement, if in the end the host family does not reside in the option initially chosen, the supplement will not be charged, and the Classic school program fee will apply.

For what type of student is this program a good fit?

  • Students who want to indicate a program preference even if it cannot be guaranteed
  • Students who are open about the location of their placement
  • Students who are passionate about Italian culture and history

Accommodations

Participants will live with a volunteer Italian family and like other family members, they will share the family’s everyday life, participate in activities and adapt to the family rules as if it was their own. Host families are volunteers, and students should be flexible regarding the composition and location (they can have children or not, live in a house or in an apartment, etc.).

Choose your area

1. Northern Italy

2. Central Italy

With this option, the student has a chance of being placed in one of the Northern Italian regions. This area does not only host two of Italy’s largest metropolitan areas (Milan and Turin), but also other classic cities, historic sites, medieval castles, beaches, the Italian Alps, beautiful countryside, art and culture. With the Classic + option students can be placed anywhere in the region.

With this option, the participant has the possibility of being placed in one of the Central Italian regions where you can find famous cities like Rome, Florence, Pisa and Siena; it is home to the scenic Tuscany region, it is filled with history and deep culture and surrounded by the Mediterranean and Adriatic Sea with charming seaside retreats. With the Classic + option students can be placed anywhere in the region.

3. Southern Italy

4. Islands

By choosing this specific region, the student has a better chance of being placed in the lower part of the Italian ‘boot’. Southern Italy is known for its warm Mediterranean climate, diverse landscapes, archaeological sites (such as the ancient Roman city of Pompei destroyed by volcano Vesuvius), beautiful small towns, perfect beaches, and local culture and cuisine. With the Classic + option students can be placed anywhere in the region.

Your student dreams of living on an island? With this option, the participant will have a chance of being placed on one of Italy’s main islands: Sardinia and Sicily. Sardinia, 200 km (120 miles) west of the mainland, is among the least densely populated of Italy’s regions. The island has idyllic mountains and tranquil villages, giving way to bustling resort towns along its rocky coastline. Sicily is one of the most densely populated islands in the Mediterranean Sea and separated by only 3 km (2 miles) from “the toe” of Italy’s mainland. The island has a picturesque coastline, historic towns, and many attractions such as well-preserved archeological sites, cathedrals, and buildings showing evidence of its history as a home for Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Normans, Spanish, and others. With the Classic + option, the student can be placed anywhere and cannot choose any specific island or location.

5. Urban area

Your student is highly motivated for a high school program in Italy but is not comfortable with possibly being placed (host family or school) in a rural area with limited public transport? With this option, the participant will have a better possibility of being placed in an urban environment (a town with at least 40.000 inhabitants, or close to a town with 40.000 inhabitant). The student cannot choose a specific location and/or region and the placement can be anywhere in Italy.
